Issa and I seem to share precisely the same sense of humour, even if we do not share his talent for writing haiku. I love the irreverence of this classic haiku, which is very appropriate for the spirit of Zen, if done properly. Issa has a light yet respectful touch that I find entirely charming, years after his death.
That same cheerful spirit was my intention in pairing the image of the Buddha with the old gates to our front garden. Buddha is even in the old iron gates, too, and his icicle lives on...
