nibbling a cucumber

  1. Sometimes, the haiku just write themselves. This particular example was scribbled in the margin of my logbook as I met with the gentleman in question, and his colleagues, in his underground lair, in China's first and largest hospital for cardiovascular medicine.

    He was China's most famous cardiovascular surgeon at the age of 35, in fact. Now, in his late 40s, he still has a quiet, thoughtful air that I appreciated very much. At key moments, he would look intensely thoughtful, nibbling on his spiky Chinese cucumber (it was a meeting over lunch) before speaking his mind.

    The image that makes the haiga is the yield from my dear wife's tomato crop, a few years ago, another meeting of fresh vegetables and Chinese doctors...
