P.s. This haiku is from an early-morning flight approaching Dubai. It is the first time that I have seen a real desert. Nothing but sand dunes. Mile after mile, just sand dunes. The rising sun cut them in half; one side bright, one side still in shadow. Imagine my surprise when the sand dunes abruptly changed into the gleaming skyscrapers of the city itself. It reminded me of the Emerald City, in "The Wizard of Oz".
The photograph that fits with this haiku is from a little closer to home: our garden. The effect and the feeling are much the same, however...
My subject is organic chemistry, I should finish in a half year, months of painful writing are coming. I was once in Oxford to follow some lectures. It was in january 2010 when everything was under snow, its a very nice city. And what is your subject? I know it is something with computers :) regards Norbert
There was a time as a schoolboy when I was convinced that I wanted to study organic chemistry at university. :)
I'm in machine learning / statistics / information engineering, the subject that, twenty years ago, would have been called "artificial intelligence". We don't use that name any more, for reasons that are probably apparent...
Winter 2010 was a lovely time to be in the city. It was entirely covered by snow. Take a peek at an old post "England is Closed" if you'd like to remind yourself. :)
Those pictures looks familiar, isn’t that building the Pembroke College? it looks very similar to the building where we stayed during this period. Organic chemistry is fun; it’s mostly about cooking in the lab :). N
