I wrote the haiku one evening in late summer, sitting on the veranda of an out-house, chatting to my wife while she worked her magic on a part of the garden. I think Chinese Mama must have been staying with us at the time. The latter had transformed our gardens in structure and colour by planting all manner of weird and wonderful arrangements, many of which were bamboo structures around which flowers and vegetables grow. The peaflowers are, of course, tiny and light things, and yet their density and number looked as if they were causing bending in the strong bamboo frame.

I quite like the haiga (linking the haiku to the image) - perhaps the bending is now undertaken by the apple-tree branch, and the weight of the little peaflowers is replaced by the (considerable) weight of my little Xiaohu.

The determination in his eye is typical...

I just noticed that the little patchwork tartan shoes that he is wearing were once worn by his father...
