Chinese, III

Chinese whispers

Chinese press conferences are tremendously amusing. Those photographs of Kissinger meeting Mao came to mind. The translator, almost conspiratorial, whispered into my left ear as the journalists and my fellow academics conducted the interrogation in Mandarin.

"One must be very careful about what one says, for it will appear in print", warned the chief scientific officer of one of China's largest telecoms operators. He looked concerned.

The image is from the same event, showing one of my friends and colleagues from Tsinghua being interviewed after her speech. The camera crew for the British news agency was much more comfortable than the Chinese press conference. There was no conspiratorial ear-whispering, for one thing.
