See the Heavy Leaf

Snow on the Gate

see the heavy leaf
on the silent windless day
fall of its own will

This haiku has an immediate magic, which causes me to feel both melancholy and happy. I have read it countless times over the years, and it still conveys the same touching sentiment, on each iteration.

The haiga is my own match of a pot from our garden that similarly means very much to me: I bought it when I was first starting at Oxford, and it now sits in my lab. This single leaf is the quiet focal point of the photograph, in a similar manner to that of Boncho's leaf.
